Texas Baby!

Man, I am blitzed. A 2300+ klm drive from Canada to Texas, 2 nights partying about as hard as anyone can reasonably be expected to and stay alive (barely) and a two leg jet back to Toronto this afternoon. Our road route took us through Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, Tennessee and Arkansas. The first 16 hours were the hardest with all four of us getting only an hours sleep or so each, 10:30pm Thursday through to 2:30pm Friday when we arrived in Memphis, Tennessee. We visited Graceland of course and then hit Memphis' famous Beale St to forget how tired we were. Then on Saturday we drove the remaining 8 hours to Dallas where we holed up in the apartment of mate of Ram's, amazing pad too. But I'm not going to write much tonight, I'm just too done, everything is fading to black, check please...

The Great North goes White

Yep, we had snow last Sunday and it stuck around for a while. Unfortunately we also had sleet and freezing rain on Monday morning and it turned the snow into hard ice. The shot below of Cam and I clearing about 5cms of snow doesn't do the work effort justice, I was stuffed after I finished the driveway and the path and I'm fairly fit after a summer of running.
The ice just sticks to the landscape and doesn't want to give up its grip. The kids of course are loving it. Each evening when they get home from school they're straight out into the backyard and sliding around on their tobogan mats. There's been a few face-plants, resulting in grazed lips, noses and chins, but it hasn't stopped them going out for more. Below's a shot of the kids hammering down a small hill up the road from our place. They look like they hate it don't they?

On the Road Again

The route is planned, the weekend is locked in. I'm heading to Dallas, Texas in an Acura TL, via Chicago, with my work buddies. The sched has us leaving Toronto around lunch time next Friday and heading to Chicago for an evening painting various things red. Then, with someone drawing the shortest straw as the designated driver and therefore the first watch behind the wheel, without any sleep, we plan to head south through Illinois in the wee hours of Saturday morning. The drive is about 8 hours Toronto-Chicago, then another 14 hours to Dallas, nice. We'll recover Saturday arvo and then check out Dallas for Saturday night and Sunday, flying home to Toronto Monday lunchtime.

What the Hick is going on?

Sorry guys, I usually use this blog to let friends and family know what's going on over here. Today I'm not going to do that, so if you want to read about Canada skip this post.

Today I read a couple of interesting articles on The Age website, both pieces on the current status of David Hicks imprisionment by the US in Cuba. Now first off let me say that I have no idea whether he's guilty or not, frankly I couldn't care less. I also don't think anyone should just be set free, without at least some idea as to why, for example the charges wont stick, the evidence is insufficient, proper legal process has not been followed etc. Let him be charged, let him defend himself, let the process be fair and just and I'll accept the outcome. I do think that the US has taken far longer than necessary to charge Hicks and they can't keep delaying forever, put up or shut up.

Anyway the first Age piece is by a former Chief Justice, I suspect he knows his law, and essentially is a response to a recent media release, read spin, by Phillip Ruddock regarding the Australian governments involvement in the Hicks case. Interesting stuff.

The second piece has some quotes from the US military prosecutor in charge of Hick's case. It's hilarious reading, here's some lawyer-talk right from his mouth to you -

"It doesn't take just a big fish to produce a tsunami. You get enough little fish together, your David Hickses, you can have catastrophic consequences." Remember this is a prosecutor, he's a lawyer. I'm not sure what his point is, perhaps he had heard that we've had some tsunami's in the region, local colour perhaps? Otherwise I have no idea what this has to do with anything and I seriously doubt he does either but it's a great sound-bite.

"None of us on the prosecution side want to be involved in a process that, personally, we think is unfair, that our family, our friends, our countrymen and the public around the world is going to perceive as unfair." This is good to know. To this guy 5 years in prison without even being charged must appear fair, I'm glad he's not my boss or the leader of my country... or even the guy who gives me my fries from Macca's, that kind of fairness might mess with my lunch.

He's also concerned that we, the public, don't appreciate the situation and that "one of [his] frustrations is not really knowing how to reach out" to us. I think that looking like you have a clue would help, perhaps demonstrating that you care about the law, you know being a lawyer and all. I mean the fact that we don't know what he's accused of is a little bit of a problem, us being a fairly free and democratic nation and all. Is this guy really so bad at his job that he can't get it done in a timely fashion? Man, if I took 5 years to finish a job I wouldn't have one. Oh sure a 5 year law case, that's nothing what with motions for continuances and appeals and... oh hang on this case hasn't even started yet, right.

Col. Morris Davis goes on to say that "he hoped Hicks' five years in detention would not be taken into account if found guilty." Yeah I guess that last five years have been an all-expenses paid US-style summer camp. The justification for this point of view? "The five years he has been at Guantanamo Bay — along with all the other detainees — that is not in my opinion adequate for his active participation as a member and supporter combatant on behalf of al-Qaeda." Yeah, well his sentence when he's found guilty is supposed to be adequate, but why not go for bonus years, everything appears to be fair game in a US military tribunal. Maybe our prosecutor friend hasn't gone far enough, why not suggest that Hick's pay his own way? Seriously this guys is only helping Hick's case, or maybe he really thinks Aussies are idiots. Are these guys from a free and democratic nation or a military junta?

I'm not sure what uniform this guy was wearing when he gave his interview, but I suspect it has really big shoes, pom poms down the front and a rainbow wig to complete the ensemble. Okay, okay, it's not really fair for me to ridicule this guy, he's in the US military. I saw 'A Few Good Men', man you don't mess around with those guys. What ever happens, no matter how bad the 'trial' by military tribunal is, I just hope that it happens soon.

The real fun in the second article is that it's titled 'The Case Against David Hicks' and then goes on to completely fail to list a single charge, everything is just heresay from the US prosecutor. He specifically doesn't say 'the accused' and he can't, because Hick's is not formally accused of anything. Can you imagine a Victorian prosecutor using the media to slander someone and then not back it up with a charge? I doubt it, that prosecutor would be in court himself, but it's fine if your in the US military.

The saddest part of this whole story is our governments behavior. The Australian government is my government, I own it. I was involved in the process to elect it, no matter which party I voted for, and I pay for it, and pay quite a bit thank you. When my government takes sides with a foreign power to deny my rights or the rights of another Australian citizen I don't think that government is working for me. Look at it another way, if an employee of mine worked with a competitor against my best interests I'd sack him.

Oh, and if you're after a cross-section of your fellow countrymens opinions on this subject you can't go passed the 'Your Say' comments, again at The Age here. Seriously I think that some of people saying 'lock him up and throw away the key, he's guilty I don't need a trial to tell me that' still think Lindy Chamberlain did it. How soon do these people forget that their opinions are manipulated daily (my opinion included of course).

Herbivores beat Carnivores

Here's a couple of shots from the Chicago Bulls vs Toronto Raptors NBA game I went to, actually, one of these is a very short YouTube clip showing the Air Canada Centre. The ACC is host to the NBA, the NHL (ice hockey) and is the venue I was at last month for The Who concert.
It's a pretty big place, seats around 20K ppl I think, a little bigger than the Tennis Centre back home. Sadly for the Raptors their best player has been out for over 6 games with an injury so they were beaten in the last quarter pretty easily.
Finally Jo's Xmas present from me arrived. I'd been trolling eBay for about 10 weeks to try to buy Jo a Canon digital SLR, the EOS 30D, and hadn't seen one go for the type of money I was hoping to pay. Then, just before Xmas a dealer demo model came up and I started bidding. The auction ended at 21:00 Xmas Eve and I don't know if that worked in my favour but I got the camera for about 65% of the normal retail and didn't really have to fight too hard to get it, loving that. So now Jo is in the digital photography age, maybe she should sell her film cameras on eBay :-).

Back to Normality

Hey everyone, hope you had a great holiday season and aren't regretting your food and drink choices too much. I'm in counciling with my liver and with some effort I'm sure we can work through our differences and get back together, so far it's still not talking to me. You may have seen that while I've not written much I have posted quite a few photos over the last few weeks. We had a great Christmas with the Andrews and then spent Boxing Day at Bobby-Marie (Jo's cousin) and Warren's place. The kids beat the adults at Disney themed Trivial Pursuit, I reckon we should have grounded them for that. We called mum and dad our Xmas day and they had heaps of hail, not fair, you guys get a white Xmas and we don't [sigh].
I worked through the next week, although to be fair it was a pretty mellow week tidying up our deployment. We spent New Years Eve at the Andrews (noticing a pattern?) and had a great time with Laura, Garry, Andrea, Dave, Lori and Bruce. I'm reliably informed that at one point some of the boys ended up without their shorts in the spa, no idea how it happened, probably some sort of bizzare spa pump incident. Anyway Jo insisted that I post the evidence online, and for that I'm truely sorry, don't blame me if you get mentally scarred.

The Friday before NYE Colin invited me out to an NBA basketball game and we saw the Toronto Raptors go down to the Chicago Bulls in Platinum class seats. It was pretty awesome, I haven't got the pictures uploaded yet, I'll post a few later tonight. Major thanks to Colin who also shouted dinner and many of the drinks as we kicked on fairly late into the night.

The kids are still off school, they get two weeks around Xmas/NY, and luckily the weather here has been incredibily mild. The day-camp that Cam went to over summer had a free skate session yesterday so they all went down for a spin and Cam collected a huge ball of shaved ice off the rink. It's in the freezer at home and is the only snow ball we've seen this winter. This week has not gone below zero and the next few days are threatening to break double digit temps. So far only 1mm of snow that lasted a few hours, bit of a pisser really. Oh well I've saved money by not hiring the guy to do my driveway this year, he must be laughing all the way to the bank though, plenty of locals were assuming a harsh winter, so far though no dice. Oh well, it's not a total loss, hopefully we'll have blue skies and no wind over the weekend so Cam and I can launch our (his) model rocket.
